Lesson 1

Nouns Mrs. Corliss
by Mrs. Klipfel

In this video, the teacher presents a short intro on nouns.  Then, the students each present their sentence that has been illustrated and read aloud by the student.  They identify the nouns in their sentence and either circle or underline the nouns.  The teacher wraps up the video at the end.

More Nmemonic Devices
by Jayne Clare

This lesson gives hints to spell words that are commonly misspelled and do not follow standard English spelling rules.

Lesson 2 held my attention more than lesson 1 because it was much shorter.  It was rather plain and the speaker sounded groggy to me, but it did not cause me to lose attention like lesson 1.  Lesson 1 had good voices, transitions were good and the pictures and annotations were very colorful and interesting.  I focused on the first 7-8 sentences, but became bored quickly because all I could think was...how many more kids in this class??  It was definitely too long.  I think the teacher could have divided the class up and make 4-5 separate screencasts.  Neither video would get my vote as superior to the other.  They both had positive qualities and negative qualities.

The components of a good screencast include a clear voice, colorful and interesting pictures and annotations and always remember to KISS (Keep It Short Sweetie)!!!

My screencast is a "How To" lesson on using the listening station.  At the beginning of the year there are so many things that are procedural instruction.  By using a screencast, you can present or review information on classroom rules or procedures to inform, keep kids engaged and take 5 to save your voice.
Searching through the different screencast lessons gave me a new perspective on this concept.  There are those moments in the classroom that steal your attention away from the students, the principal pops in, you have an urgent situation that needs your immediate attention.  It would be advantageous to have a file of screencast lessons to go to for those few minutes.  Kids are engaged, learning or reteaching is happening even when you aren't available.
I feel that there are some specific lessons in the 2nd grade math curriculum that children could truly benefit hearing over and over (telling time, counting money, double digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, etc.).  Students who are struggling could view these lessons over and over as needed for reteaching.
Students could make screencasts to show Daily Oral Language editing marks and give examples of how to edit your writing in the writing process.  This would be flipping the classroom.

Screencast lessons relate to the SAMR model at all four levels.  My screencast is at the Augmentation level.  Students are able to see up close because of the photos in the lesson.  They are receiving the same information, with functional improvement.
